What are the Repair Methods for Train Wheel Defects?

The main repair method for train wheel defects is "wheel repair" (i.e., wheel turning). This involves precision machining to restore the train wheel's geometry, ensuring safe and stable operation.

Wheel repair is a core repair technology for common defects in train wheelsets, such as tread scratches, peeling, out-of-roundness, and flange wear. This process uses a specialized wheel turning machine that does not require disassembly, performing automated machining to remove damaged layers and restore the train wheel to its standard profile.

The repair process mainly includes:

1. Preliminary inspection: Using tools such as a wheel diameter gauge and depth gauge, a comprehensive inspection of the train wheelset is conducted, measuring diameter deviation, flange thickness, and the degree of tread damage, and the data is entered into the system.

2. Parameter setting: Based on the measurement data, the feed rate, speed, and cutting path are precisely set in the wheel turning machine to ensure machining accuracy is controlled within a 0.1 mm error range.

3. Turning: As the train wheelset rotates, the cutting tool cuts along a preset trajectory, removing surface "cocoon"-like damage, such as scratches, pits, and polygonal wear. The entire process takes approximately 1 hour per train wheelset.

4. Quality Inspection: After turning, key parameters such as wheel flange thickness (standard 2833 mm), coaxial wheel diameter difference (0.5 mm), and wheelset inner distance (1353±1 mm) need to be inspected to ensure compliance with TB/T 2879.5 technical specifications.

For more serious train wheel defects, such as cracks or localized chipping, in addition to turning, welding repair may be used:

1. Cracks in the train wheel require drilling anti-crack holes and then layered welding;

2. Peeled or missing areas require beveling and filling welding;

3. After welding, slow cooling and magnetic particle testing are required to check for porosity or incomplete fusion.

In addition, ultrasonic testing and magnetic particle testing are also used to help identify internal defects and ensure that the repaired train wheelsets are free of safety hazards.
