What do Train Wheels Look Like?
As you can see in the pictures, train wheels are quite different from car tires. Here's a detailed breakdown of their unique features:
1. Solid Steel Structure: Unlike car tires, train wheels are not hollow or pneumatic. They are large, solid discs made of forged and hardened steel.
2. Flange (Inner Lip): This is the most crucial visual feature. Look closely at the wheel, and you'll see a thick ridge on the inner rim. This ridge extends downwards, hooking onto the top of the rail to prevent the train from derailing.
3. Wheel Surface (Slightly Conical): The surface of the wheel that contacts the rail is not completely flat but slightly conical. This unique shape is a clever engineering design that helps the train stay naturally centered on the track and turn smoothly.
4. Wheelsets: Unlike car wheels, train wheels do not rotate independently. They are permanently attached in pairs to a solid steel bar called an axle. This means that the two wheels on the same axle always rotate synchronously at the exact same speed.
5. Size and color: They are very heavy and bulky (the diameter of a standard train wheel is typically about 3 feet or 1 meter). Because they are exposed metal, they are dark gunmetal gray or black, and due to the intense friction between the steel, they are often covered with a fine layer of dark metallic dust.
