What are Train Wheel Drawings?
Train wheel drawings are technical engineering drawings (2D CAD schematics or 3D models) that fully define the geometry, dimensions, tolerances, materials, and manufacturing requirements of railway wheels and complete wheelsets (wheel and axle assemblies). They are used for the manufacture, inspection, maintenance, and repair of train wheels.
1. What information are included?
1) Core geometry and contours
The most critical parts: the contours of the flange (the rolling surface in contact with the rail) and the flange (anti-derailment lip). These curves are not simple circles; they adhere to strict national/international standards (e.g., EN13715, Chinese TB/T449) to ensure stable curve passage and low wheel-rail wear.
2) Key Dimensions (Strict Tolerances)
* Nominal rolling diameter of the wheel
* Flange height, flange thickness, rim width
* Hub bore diameter (interference fit to axle)
* Wheelset spacing: the distance between the inner surfaces of two wheels on the same axle, crucial for track gauge matching
* Rim thickness, rim web thickness/thickness, chamfer and fillet radii for stress relief
3) Technical Specifications
* Material grade (high-strength rolled steel)
* Heat treatment requirements for wear-resistant wheel surfaces
* Surface finish, non-destructive testing rules, marking requirements
* Assembly instructions for pressing the wheel onto the axle
2. Two Main Drawing Types
1) Single Wheel Drawing: Covers a single wheel, showing the hub, rim web, flange, and rim-flange profile. Used for profile adjustments during wheel production and overhaul.
2) Wheelset Drawing: Shows the complete wheelset assembly: two wheels pressed onto the same axle, including axle dimensions, bearing housings, and overall assembly tolerances.

2) Workshops: References for remachining worn wheels on lathes.
